The Western Equatoria State county commissioners have promised to unite the area communities to restore peace.
The commissioners made the promises during the one-day commissioners’ workshop on the state level, envisioning the permanent constitution-making of South Sudan over the weekend.
Speaking to The City Review from the WES capital, Yambio, Hussein Enoka Bakumba, who is the Yambio County Commissioner who was the representative of the other 10 commissioners, said the workshop was one of its kind and was pivotal to achieving permanent peace in the area.
He said because they were the closest leaders to the communities, the one-day commissioners’ workshop covered a wide range of beneficial topics.
The first resolution directed the commissioners to educate the people about the revitalised peace agreement.
“We are responsible for grassroots people, including youth, women, men, and very groups where others are found,” Bakumba said.
“Our mission is to go out there in our communities to preach the good news of coming together and uniting people for the state to move forward.”
Bakumba added that all the commissioners from the 10 WES counties have reiterated their commitment to work together for the common good of their communities.
“We are happy as commissioners to come together and discuss things that could not allow our communities to hate each other.
“Most importantly, we are happy with the organizers, and we promised and will continue to unite our people, “he added.
The commissioner’s representative further disclosed that, among other very important things, was the issue of the permanent constitution-making process, saying they noted that it is important to involve and inform the grassroots about it.
“We are not aware of many things happening in Juba, especially the permanent constitution-making process. It was only when we were empowered and informed in the workshop.”
He stressed that he was informed to empower his women, men, youth and different levels of different groups about their rights and how we could stand up for them.
Bakuman noted that the commissioners were briefed about the outcome of the national dialogue and what was supposed to be done afterwards.
The workshop was attended by the Western Equatoria State Deputy Governor, Dr Kennedy Gaaniko, and other senior state officials.
The workshop was organised by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in collaboration with the WES government. The workshop was organized under the theme “Your voice, your future.”
