South Sudan’s COVID-19 cases pile up by 166

South Sudan’s COVID-19 cases have gone up by 166 cases in the past 24 hours, data from the COVID-19 Incident Manager John Rumunu reveals.
This has pushed the country’s cumulative caseload to 13,309 and the total active cases now are 562. The recovered cases from the COVID-19 virus according to the document are 12,614
The country’s death toll stands at 133, although there were no new deaths recorded in the past 24 hours.
564 contacts are currently being followed up for testing and treatment.
Data from the national ministry of health reveals that so far, 174,672 people have been fully vaccinated.
The total number of vaccines consumed to date from the December 9 have reached 88.91 per cent
WHO said they have distributed vaccines to more than 224 facilities across the country. These include all the 10 states’ three administrative areas. It added that 66 of the 80 countries have received the vaccine and that the remaining 14 countries are experiencing floods or having logistical difficulties.
“If that changes in January or February, we will see vaccines being made available and, therefore, access will increase and vaccinations will take place in those locations,” he assured.
The country is currently receiving its second batch of the Johnson and Johnson COVID-19 vaccine.
The vaccine was donated to South Sudan by the United States government through COVAX, which has been instrumental in extending the reach of the jabs in African countries.
George Azania Legge, the Extended Program on Immunization (EPI) Manager at the Ministry of Health, confirmed last week on Thursday that the country received 168,000 doses of Johnson and Johnson.
The ministry of health stated that there would be additional batches of 93,600 AND 336,000 more J and J does that have been accepted by the Government of South Sudan.
The ministry is currently vaccinating its population and has started deployment of Johnson and Johnson to the other states
The vaccination centres in Juba are located at Juba Teaching Hospital, Buluk Police Hospital, Military Hospital, Kator, Nyakuron, Munuki, and Gurei Primary Health Care centres.
