Police in Aweil have refuted reports circulating on social media that the fire that gutted Mayom Akong-Ril market was caused by Miseriya militiamen.

This is after South Sudan Eye posted on its Facebook page that the third division “military base in Aweil refused to defend the country against Sudanese militants because the government of South Sudan does not care about its soldiers.”

But the Aweil Police Spokesperson, Guot Guot Akol, described these reports as baseless. He explained that the fire was caused by a heavy storm.

“Regarding the burning of Mayom Akong-ril market, that information is not true. What caused the fire outbreak in Marial Akol state was a heavy storm where the whole state can bear witness to, “he clarified.

He said that contrary to the reports on the social media, the police in Northern Bahl Ghazal State are in full control of the state.

He said: “I want to clarify that northern Bahr Ghazal state is under the full control of the police and SSPDF, and the government is vigilant in protecting the lives and properties of the people.”

The police spokesperson revealed that about 15 shops were burnt, and one person sustained injuries that were not life-threatening.

He assured the citizens that “Aweil is safe, Aweil is secure, and Aweil is stable.”
