A UN report has revealed that community-based militia groups are responsible for 78 per cent of violence against civilians in which children have also been affected.

The annual brief on violence affecting civilians released by the Human Rights Division of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan stated that murders, violent attacks, abduction, sexual abuses were major forms of the violence.

The study document 2, 421 civilians killed in 2020, more than double the previous incidents committed in 2019 with 1 500 injuries up from 866 cases.

The most affected areas, where civilians were either killed, injured or abducted, were Greater Pibor Administrative Area, Jonglei, Warrap and Lakes states.

“The surge in subnational violence is deeply concerning and has had a devastated impact on the lives of communities already suffering huge economic deprivation due to flooding in areas like Jonglei,” said David Shearer, the Head of UNMISS.

The study—which covered a period of one year from January-December 2020—however, shows a decline in cases of sexual violence against women.

The report however showed the vast majority of the violence was geography concentrated in 72 Payams of the 540 Payams of South Sudan which accounted for more than 79 per cent of the victims.

According to the report, killings rose from 1, 131 in 2019 to 2 421 in 2020, a 114 per cent increment followed by abductions which increased from 866 in 2019 to 1 531 in 2020, m increment of 77 per cent.
