Spanish champions Real Madrid thumped English champions, Liverpool, to grab a commanding 3-1 win and advantage in the first leg of the Uefa Champions League quarterfinal.

Real headed into the match without Raphael Varane but their defence remained watertight throughout the better part of the game. That performance managed to put off the threat from a trio of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and in-form winger Diogo Jota who was preferred ahead of Roberto Firmino.

Toni Kroos struck a long ball to set up Vinicius Jr who beat the Liverpool defence with pace to slot home in the 27th minute. Marco Asensio then scored before the half-time mark to give Real a double lead.

In the second half, Mo Salah’s super strike gave the Reds a glimpse of probable come back but for a short time. Vinicius Jr scored his second in the 65th minute to extend the lead of the Los Blancos and wrap up a win at Santiago Bernabeu.

The 13th time Uefa Champions League winner will head to Anfield hoping for a draw or a 1-0 loss at worst to ensure victory.

City wins

Elsewhere, Manchester City registered a 2-1 victory over the German side Borussia Dortmund. Kevin De Bruyne struck in the 19th minute after which Marco Reus levelled things up in the 84th minute but just for a short while. Phil Foden restored City’s lead in the 90th minute to ensure victory for the hosts and grab advantage into the second leg.
