Arsenal upsets Chelsea as Liverpool and Man United set to lock horns tonight

Arsenal held firm to survive a late onslaught by Chelsea to nick a win by a solitary goal on Wednesday night.

The Gunners went into the match as underdogs and seemed to have nothing to play for after having an underwhelming season. It was Chelsea that needed maximum points to ensure they leapt to third, above Leicester City but that was not the day.

A first-half howler by the Blues defence ensured victory for Mikel Arteta’s men. Kurt Zouma passed to a pressured Jorginho who hit a backpass towards his goal oblivious to the awkward positioning of Kepa Arizzabalaga. The Spanish goalkeeper cleared the ball off the line but Pierre Aubameyang pounced on the rebound to feed Emile Smith-Rowe who finished on the left bottom corner.

Thomas Tuchel made a number of changes to chase the game but the resurgent side could not break the Arsenal’s low block which was packed with a number of men behind the ball.

The match ended 1-0 in favour of the Gunners after carefully capitalizing on the opposition’s defensive lapses and lack of clinical finish.

On Thursday, Manchester United and Liverpool will square it off in their pending fixture. Liverpool needs to win all the remaining four matches to bounce back to a top-four position while Manchester United is safe in second place.
