The African Union (AU) has suspended Mali after the West African country experienced a second coup just in a span of nine months.

International media such as BBC and AFP reported that the AU made the decision after the regional bloc Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) had also punished Mali for the coup.

The two bodies are pushing for Bamako to revert to civilian rule and are asking the military to strictly follow the transition timelines in place, which will lead to an election next year.

Last week, Col Assimi Goita announced that he would appoint a new prime minister after he successfully toppled the regime of President Bah Ndaw and Prime Minister Moctar Ouane, who were detained and later released.

Early this week, Col Goita named the leader of 5 June-Rally of Patriotic Forces (M5-RFP) movement Choguel Kokalla Maïga as new prime minister. He urged the people to support his pick for the premiership position.

Ndaw and Ouane had led the transitional government that was tasked with steering the country back to civilian rule after the ouster of president  Ibrahim Boubacar Keita in August last year.
