Gunfire rock Juba after army officer shoots in protest of arrest

Short-lived gunfire rocked South Sudan’s capital, Juba, on Monday at 3 pm sending forth panic on the residents of the city.

Albeit the details about the gunfire remain scanty, The City Review established that the shooting came from an army general who refused to obey a police warrant of arrest when the officers were sent to pick him from his Juba residence.

A source told The City Review that Gen Mike Mike had to be convinced to surrender to the Military Intelligence unit that he is attached to after he declined to go with the police.  After a short while, military officers were seen milling around his compound after which they drove off and left allowing tension to ease in the city.

The City Review contacted South Sudan Police Service Spokesperson, Maj. Gen. Daniel Justin, who confirmed the incident but remained economical with the details. The police boss added the matter was under the probe of the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF).

Juba has enjoyed relative peace since the signing of the 2018 peace agreement between President Salva Kiir and First Vice President Dr Riek Machar.
