Rashford, Saka and Sancho racially abused after missing penalties in England defeat

English attackers Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford and Bukayo Saka have reportedly received racist abuse online after the trio missed their penalties against Italy in the Euro 2020 finals.

England got bundled out with a 3-2 loss in the Euro 2020 final Sunday evening.

Marcus Rashford hit the post despite initially reading Gianluigi Donnarumma’s position on goal and making the Italian goalkeeper dive in the wrong direction. On the other hand, Saka and Sancho had their spot-kicks comfortably saved by the AC Milan keeper, hence denying England a chance to win first silverware in 55 years.

After the game, the trio is reported to have been abused online with Arsenal player, Saka, receiving monkey emojis on his Instagram page.

“We could not be clearer that anyone behind such disgusting behaviour is not welcome in following the team,” said the FA in a statement, as quoted by BBC.

“We will do all we can to support the players affected while urging the toughest punishments possible for anyone responsible.

“We will continue to do everything we can to stamp discrimination out of the game, but we implore the government to act quickly and bring in the appropriate legislation so this abuse has real-life consequences.

“Social media companies need to step up and take accountability and action to ban abusers from their platforms, gather evidence that can lead to prosecution and support making their platforms free from this type of abhorrent abuse.”

Rashford is encountering a racist abuse incident for the second time in a major final after the attacker was subjected to a disgusting incident when Manchester United lost to Villareal in the Europa League final.
