The leader of the Other Political Parties (OPP) Peter Mayen has attributed the infighting to ‘some greedy members who want to bag more seats’ at the expense of other deserving members of the political outfit.

“I am trying to make sure that there is justice because the OPP umbrella alone has 22 [parties], Alliance has 30 [parties] and the other four individual parties. So, it comes to over 30 parties [and those] over 30 parties must be represented; they must also see themselves either at the state level or at the National level”.

The OPP leader was speaking to Radio Miraya Tuesday morning during the breakfast show. Mayen said he made it clear that parties that were already represented at the states level should give chance to the other parties that have not been represented.

“Even though the agreement gives us [an] upper hand…the principles of the agreement is that decisions are made based on the inclusion of leadership and also there is the key principle that you cannot be representative where you have [no] prominence.”

“So if your party is not prominent in that area, how do you expect us [to choose you a representative]? We have to represent the party which is [popular] there,” Mayen asserted.

Mayen said the wrangles within the OPP could only be solved by the members themselves without involving other political leaders from other parties. This is after five other signatories to the party rebelled against his leadership and said he was no longer the leader of OPP. According to OPP Spokesperson, Albino Akol Atak, plans are underway to submit some new names to President Salva Kiir for the nomination of some new members to the Revitalised Transitional National Legislative Assembly (RTNLA).

“Honorable Peter Mayen is now misinforming the public. He is confusing the public that he is the leader of the OPP today, although, we have been saying it.  One of the resolutions that should be made public [is] that Peter Mayen is not the leader of OPP,” he said.

Nomination tussles

In May 2020, Mayen was accused of nepotism when the parties gave out the names of individuals preferred for the nomination to the parliament. But he talked to the City Review rubbishing such claims.
