President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Wednesday held talks with newly appointed IGAD Special Envoy to South Sudan, Ambassador Musa Dijama Ali, focusing on speeding up full implementation of the Revitalised Peace Agreement and preparing for the upcoming general elections
The meeting affirmed shared commitment to consolidate stability, respect national sovereignty, and see through the final phase of the transitional period.
“Our work here in South Sudan is very straightforward. If you go with us, we will go a very long distance,” President Kiir told the envoy, welcoming him to the post and expressing confidence he will build on the work of his predecessor, Ambassador Ismail Wais.
The President also thanked Djibouti for its consistent support, noting its leadership under President Ismaïl Omar Guelleh has always backed South Sudan’s sovereignty and peace efforts.
Ambassador Dijama Ali pledged IGAD’s continued support to advance the political process, coordinate among stakeholders, and help create conditions for credible, peaceful elections. “We respect South Sudan’s sovereignty and will work fully within our mandate to serve the people’s aspirations,” he said.
Foreign Affairs Minister Dr. James Pitia Morgan described IGAD’s role as vital to peacebuilding, while IGAD’s Head of Mission Dr. Victoria Anib Majur also reaffirmed regional backing for a successful transition.
The discussions come as South Sudan pushes to finalize outstanding peace tasks ahead of elections seen as a landmark step toward lasting stability and democratic governance.
