A South Sudanese woman who won a parliamentary seat in Western Australia in March 2021 has been sworn into office.
Ayor Makur Chuot (pictured), who became the first black African legislator in Australia, took an oath of office on Monday, May 25, to begin a stellar career in politics in a foreign land.
Accompanied by her spouse, brother and three children Chuot, expressed excitement saying she would relish the new challenge before and make a name by serving the people.
“I’m very excited about this new role. This is the place decisions are made. For me to be involved in the team, where I can actually make a difference working with experienced people, is something I’m really excited for,” she said, as quoted by the Australian press.
She arrived in Australia in 2015 after spending 10 years in Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya when she was 16 years old.
As a graduate in accounting, Chuot was an international model before she picked interest in politics.
Her father was killed during the 1992 civil war, forcing her, the mother and her siblings to flee to Kenya for safety and later resettled in Australia by an uncle.
