The South Sudan National Movement for Change (SSNMC) is planning to hold its election in the next three months to elect a new chairperson as the party prepares for life after Joseph Bangasi Bakosoro who rejoined the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) earlier this month.

Bakosoro defected to SPLM together with three other senior members. The party says the election will be held in line with the party’s constitutional provisions.

“We have a constitution as a party that provides that in an event where the chair is unable to continue in his/her position, the deputy chair should take over and then conduct the election after 90 days,” Moro Isaac Jenesio, the SSNMC Secretary-General told City Review exclusively.

He said currently, the SSNMC party has been headed by the former deputy chair Elias Ibrahim Towo from Western Bhar-El Ghazal as the interim chairperson.

He said he will continue to be in charge of the party until the elections are conducted within 90 days.

“He will be preparing for the election, after that the party comes out with rules and regulations guiding the election process,” he said.

“We are going to other states to mobilize resources to be able to bring some of our members from the states to Juba to participate in the election process,” Mr Isaac said.

The secretary-general said the party intended to have a democratic process and inclusive participation of the party’s members.

He said the SSNMC party believes in the democratic process that unites its members.

Mr Isaac reiterated the commitment of the party to the continued implementation process of the Revitalised Peace Agreement in the country.

He said the country has reached the stage where the agreement cannot be amended but implemented in letter and spirit.

On the position of the minister of public service that was previously held by former SSNMC Chairperson Bakosoro, Mr Issac said the position still belongs to the South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA).

“As an employee of the organization, he decided that his time with the organization has come to an end. He has shifted to the side that has the bigger share and we strongly believe that we will get a better share within that share but we shall not amend the share of the SSOA constituents,” he explained.

The Secretary-General said the party is bigger than an individual and urged SSNMC die-hard members to know that the party is still functioning despite the defection of their former chairman.
