Everton piled misery upon Liverpool with a 2-0 defeat which further defined the rotten run of form by the defending champions.

Liverpool went into the game after gathering confidence thanks to a 2-0 win over RB Leipzig in the course of the week. But at the end of the game, the win over the German side may not have meant anything worthwhile. The Reds fell behind in just the third minute of the game after Richarlison scored putting Everton ahead in the Merseyside derby.

Jordan Henderson had an opportunity to draw Liverpool level but Jordan Pickford saved his effort before the Reds skipper limped off with an injury in the first half. Everton right back Seamus Coleman failed to double the lead from six yards after his short never troubled Alisson Becker.

Same fate befell Sadio Mane who squandered golden chances when he failed to capitalize on the headers to level the scores.

Gylfi Sigurdsson converted from the spot in the 83rd minute to increase the lead for the visitors and set them for the historic win that would send their fans into a meltdown. Everton win at Anfield was the first one since 1999. Also, it was the first one since Everton beat Liverpool in a derby in 2010.

Liverpool lost its fourth consecutive match since 1923 when the reigning champion had such a frustrating campaign.

They now go to sixth on the table with 40 points behind fifth-placed West Ham United with 42 points.
