South Sudan has reported a significant low turnout for COVID-19 vaccination as over 126, 000 doses are yet to be administered.
Since early April when the exercise began, the Ministry of Health has vaccinated less than 10, 000 people, the health authorities reported on Sunday, May 16, 2021.
“In terms of vaccination we are still at a low point, as par Saturday, the total people do far vaccinated is 6, 403. This shows that we still have over 126 000 doses that need to be administered,” said Dr. Richard Lako, COVID-19 Incident Manager.
Speaking during COVID-19 weekly media briefing, Dr. Lako, said authorities were considering extension of the vaccination centres across the country for people to access.
On March 25, South Sudan received 132, 000 doses of the Astra Zeneca COVID-19 vaccine through the COVAX facility.
In the following month, the country said it would destroy over 60, 000 doses of Oxford/AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine which expired without being used.
