A delegation from Malawi headed by the country’s Minister of Trade, Sosten Alfred Gwengwe, has arrived in South Sudan’s capital Juba for bilateral talks to boost trade between the two countries.

The delegation will be expected to negotiate and sign a memorandum of understanding with South Sudan’s Ministry of Trade on Wednesday, June 9, to effect trade between the two as members of African Continental Free Trade Area.

Malawi, an agricultural country, has a surplus of 1.2 million metric tonnes of maize ready to be offloaded outside the country, and South Sudan could be the first to receive the commodity as part of the agreement.

“We also have surplus of beans, groundnuts, sugar and tea [and we are] ready to start with in South Sudan. We would also invite South Sudan to Malawi to bring us petroleum products because we do not have petroleum,” said Alfred.

Mr Athian Athian Dut, Minister of Trade, welcomed the delegation and promised his ministry’s support to Malawian investors willing to do business in South Sudan.
