Kit-Gwang not after fighting Machar, says Mabior

A senior member of Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army-in Opposition (SPLM/A) faction loyal to Gen. Simon Gatwech has said Kit-Gwang’s Declaration is not advocating for war against their party rivals.

Capt. Mabior Garang De Mabior (pictured), a former deputy Minister of Interior in the Revitalised Transitional Government of National Unity, said the Kit-Gwang declaration was not a call to return the country to war.

“What we need is the implementation of the security arrangement for peace so that we can all go home and build our broken lives; the issue is not the leadership of Dr Riek Machar,” Garang told Education Podcast in an interview.

“The Kit-Gwang declaration is another chance for peace, real peace in South Sudan engine is in the implementation of the security arrangement the rest have nothing much,” he added.

Garang argued that the Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan and the revitalised peace agreement were great if they had been implemented.

He said the provisions in the agreement represent the solution to the country’s problems and healing the nation. He added that what only needs to be done is to edit it so that it can be consistent with the new reality of the day.

Earlier Gen. Simon Gatwech declared himself the interim leader of the SPLM/A-IO and the First Vice president of the country. This decision had been dismissed by Dr. Riek Machar and the SPLM-IO Political Bureau in Juba.

However, Garang reiterated that their group was committed to the IGAD communique of its Council of Ministers’ 73rd extra-ordinary meeting last two weeks ago.

“The Kit-Gwang declaration is committed to resolving the internal dispute within the movement using peaceful means. This will facilitate the implementation of the security arrangement and bringing political stability to our country,” he stressed.

Clash

Garang’s assurance comes after a bitter confrontation ensued between forces allied to Gen. Gatwech and those allied to Dr Machar on Saturday, August 6. The shootout, which led to the death of soldiers from the opposing factions, took place in Magenis, Upper Nile shortly after the declaration was made.

However, a ceasefire came through in a matter of days after President Salva Kiir and First Vice President Dr Riek Machar held a meeting to seek the remedial measures.
