JUBA – A woman in Aweil Town of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State has set herself on fire and died at a local hospital in a horrendous suicide incident.
Speaking to City Review Thursday afternoon, a source who sought anonymity said the woman identified as Amou Geng Geng set herself ablaze after a misunderstanding with the husband Dr. Machar Machar on suspicion of marital infidelity.
The source said the 23-year-old succumbed to wounds sustained from flames.
Ms. Amou, according to the source, was living in Napahasha residential area within Aweil town and was allegedly in a relationship with Anuai Chan Majak, a 19-year-old boy in the neighborhood.
The late felt provoked when the alleged secret affair was reported by neighbors to the husband who was in Kwajok, setting the stage for a physical showdown between the accused and the neighbors in question.
“She went and fought her neighbors, the mother of the boy, and even the stepmother to that boy,” the source revealed.
Mr. Machar, the source said, was informed of the incident after returning from his journey in Kwajok.
After a brief meeting held at a neighbor’s house, Machar, who was also informed of the incident, was infuriated and upset with his wife after returning home.
Curious, Ms. Amou made an effort to find out what transpired but the seemingly frustrated husband declined to speak.
Later, the husband opened up that he was told of the secret affair the wife was having with the 19-year-old, an accusation Amou denied.
Machar threatened to take her back to her father’s house under an indefinite suspension.
The marital rift ensued. On 10th August, at 7 am, the source said, Amou told her husband she was going to wash clothes at a nearby stream.
To Machar’s shock, the wife soaked herself in petrol before lighting fire.
“She poured petrol on herself and took the lighter and then set the fire on her body and she was rushed to Aweil Hospital,” the source told City Review.
Amou sustained serious burn injuries on her chest and hands and died as doctors could only do very little to help.
