Communications authority impounds fake phones in Juba

National Communication Authorities (NCA) has confiscated over 4,000 substandard mobile phones at Juba International Airport.

NCA announced on its Twitter page that the incident happened yesterday, and it is the first in South Sudan.

“The National Communication Authority office at Juba International Airport on Tuesday detained about four thousand substandard pieces of phones imported from China,” the post stated.

It is not yet clear whether or not the importer has been arrested or charged.

South Sudan, which gained independence in 2011, is said to be the dumping ground for all kinds of substandard products including food.

In 2022, the National Bureau Standard impounded and destroyed significant quantity of expired sugar and maize flour imported to the country through Kenya and Uganda.

In the same year, the authorities also banned a branch of soft drink called Sawa-Sawa imported from neighbouring countries.
