The Mayor of Juba City Council, Kalisto Lado Faustino, has said the city will soon be free of garbage.

Lado revealed this in a statement he issued on Saturday during the inspection of the ongoing demolition of structures that had been built along the roads in Juba.

“We believe [that] keeping Juba clean, green and safe will be an achievement and we will be free of the garbage soon in Juba City,” Lado said.

The Director of Environment and Sanitation for Juba City Council, Gasim Ibrahim, said the collection of the garbage in every street and within the residential is a daily routine assigned to the authorities of Juba City Council.

“This is what we are doing every day and it is our work as the authorities of Juba City Council to make sure that the streets and residential areas remain clean,” said Ibrahim.

In July 2021, the Chairperson of Juba City Legislative Assembly, Peter Paulino Loro, said the municipal authority had been operating for the last two years without a mayor, hence, this was contributing to the weak management of waste disposals within the city.

According to Paulino,  Juba City Council was sourcing for sufficient funding to facilitate the removal of the stockpiles of garbage seen in many residential suburbs and the Central Business District.

He said waste management remained a challenge because the JCC has not passed the budget for past fiscal years to fund the garbage collection.

He said the JCC has only four trucks serving the whole city, hence, this shortage makes it difficult to promptly clean the residential areas.

Last month, the Central Equatoria State Governor Emmanuel Adil Anthony commended the Juba City Council Mayor Kalisto Lado for restructuring the city.

Governor Adil said the demolition exercise being conducted by the mayor was meant to standardise Juba to meet the status of a modern city.

He directed the mayor to double the efforts in keeping Juba City clean campaign to make it green and conducive for the inhabitants.

Adil also urged Juba residents and the traders to support the mayor in his endeavour to keep Juba clean, saying it was a collective responsibility.

The garbage collection in Juba City remained a big issue with tonnes of solid wastes generated by the city dwellers since the economic hardship kicked in.

Juba City Council Authority tried to give some of the contracts to local firms so that they can manage the collection but the arrangement proved futile.

JICA and UNICEF in collaboration with Juba City Council have brought four contractors that have been assisting in collecting the garbage along the streets and within the residential areas.
