Aweil woman beheads own baby, dumps body at graveyard

JUBA – The police in Northern Bahr-el-Ghazal State is detaining a woman accused of beheading her child and dumping the body at a graveyard in Aweil Town.

The 25-year-old woman identified as Achut Kon Deng gave birth in Aweil hospital and later killed and dumped the baby in the graveyard at Maper residential area.

A police report shared with City Review says Ms. Kon claimed that she killed the toddler to fend off a mark of shame as she fell pregnant after getting raped.

Authorities in Aweil confirmed the incident and said Ms. Kon is in custody and that the police have launched further investigations into the matter.

The report also says the woman was eight months pregnant and could not abort the child. Kon told the police that she never contemplated abortion after she was raped.

A police insider who spoke to City Review anonymously on Tuesday because of authorization concerns said the rapist in question was found and the body of the baby was also traced and found. But without the head.

“The man accused of rape was found and unfortunately the child also was found without the head because the head was cut off,” the source said.

“The woman is under investigation because the information she is giving sounds incredible and insufficient,’’ added the source.

Ms. Kon, according to the well-placed source, is being interrogated for further information to aid the law enforcement agents with investigations.
