An officer attached to the National Security Service (NSS) in Yambio, Western Equatoria State, has been detained after being accused of shooting a detainee in a cell.
According to State Information Minister, William Adriano Baiki, the officer opened fire on one detainee and injured another in the process, leading to their subsequent deaths at a local hospital.
According to Baiki, who spoke to The City Review on Wednesday, an officer belonging to the NSS reportedly arrested a man said to have shot at him last year in Juba. The officer detained the suspected assailant at the Yambio NSS facility.
The minister said the national security officer was deployed in Yambio after he recovered from the gunshot wound inflicted by unknown gunmen.
“One of the national security officers travelled to Newsite in Juba. He was attacked and shot in the belly, so after he fell, they took his money and the motorbike and the attackers escaped to Yambio and he went to Izzo,” Baiki told The City Review in a telephone interview from the State capital Yambio on Thursday afternoon.
Adriano said in a previous interview on Wednesday that the suspect went to Yambio to buy fuel and that is when the security officer was able to meet him in the town and immediately arrested him.
“So yesterday they met in the market and the officer arrested him and took him to the national security detention but at 7 pm, he went to the cell and opened fire on the assailant and [one] detainee was also injured. All of them [victims] died in the hospital,” Adriano narrated.
However, he said the national security officer who revenged against the suspect has also been detained.
Meanwhile, the state minister said the authorities have collected ammunition from the civilians among them 14 AK 47 rifles, pangas, arrows, and fabricated local pistols in Yambio.
