JUBA – At least three people have been killed and two others left in critical condition after they were bitten by snakes in Kwajok County of Warrap State.
According to one of the residents in the area, there has been an increase in cases of snake bites in the area.
Akol Deng, who was interviewed by Eye Radio during the Dawn show program yesterday, said the number of people being bitten by snakes on a daily basis has been on the rise. He attributed this to floodwaters that have marooned homes in the area.
He said out of the five people who had been referred to Kwajok Health Centre for treatment, three of them died while two others were in critical condition.
“There are doctors in the hospital attending to them but the problem is some of the people often bitten by the snakes may not reach to the hospital; they die on the way,” he said.
When contacted for comments, Riing Deng Ading, the State Minister of Information said he was not aware of any reported death case of snakebite in Kwajok.
He promised to contact the Commissioner of Kwajok County for more details.
“I don’t have any clear information about the incident. Let me first confirm from the commissioner then I will get back to you later,” Riing said
Human-wildlife conflicts have been on the rise lately. Last week a hyena killed at least three people in Tonj South County, Warrap State, and wounded four others.
The hyena attacked two different families on the same night. The authority said it was the first incident ever reported in the area.
