The civil society has warned of the possible ruining of the revitalised peace agreement if parties resort to posing threat to each other in various jurisdictions.
The Executive Director of Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO), Edmund Yakani, said threatening a peace partner was a violation of the peace agreement which parties should desist from as they struggle to the implement remainder of the chapters.
“Posing political threats towards peace partners in line with the implementation of the Revitalised Agreement on Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS) is tantamount to the violation (of peace),” said Yakani.
He raised the alarm in a press statement on Wednesday calling for a change of attitudes among some politicians to effect lasting peace in the country.
On Monday, the members of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM-IO) threatened to withdraw their constitutional post holders from the Warrap State government citing mistreatment and intimidation by Governor Aleu Anyieny Aleu.
Warrap State SPLM-IO Caucus at the Transitional National Legislative Assembly (TNLA) alleged that governor Aleu threatened to kill SPLM-IO constitutional post holders whom he accused of causing insecurity in Warrap State.
“It is important for the public to know that what is happening in Warrap State is a violation of the R-ARCSS and must be addressed immediately. These acts are against the peace in the country,” said Member of Parliament Yolanda Awel Deng on Tuesday.
She also accused the governor of extrajudicial killing of 43 Warrap citizens who were from the nonruling party –SPLM, as well as threatening to kill SPLM-IO constitutional post holders. The accusations the governor Anyieny dismissed.
Bur Yakani said, “These negative developments in Warrap state undermines the spirit of the R ARCSS implementation centred on political attitude of consultations and consensus-building.”
Last week, officials in Northern Bahr el Ghazal also stated that the security apparatus loyal to the governor interrupted the SPLM-IO meeting which violated the freedom of association and right to freedom of expression as well as the revitalized peace agreement.
