Female candidate ejected from exam room to be “married off”
A senior four student at King’s College Secondary School was reportedly removed forcefully from the examination hall by his brother to be married off.
Lual Monyluak Dau, the Minister of General Education and Instruction in Jonglei State, said the family of the girl stormed the school compound demanding that she be stopped from sitting for her examinations and handed over to them.
According to the minister, the school administration tried to persuade the family of Adut Garang to drop their plans and let the girl continue with her education, but such pleas fell on deaf ears. After the brief stand-off, the family members stormed into the exam room and seized the girl.
“The brother and his friends took the candidate and left the school premises.”
“We don’t know where they have taken Adut. We informed the Member of Parliament representing the county and the legal advisor of the government to convince the relatives of Adut Garang to allow her to sit for the exam papers that she had missed, “Lual said, adding that they are waiting for feedback from the advisor.
Lual urged the communities in Jonglei State and the country at large not to take the laws into their own hands and to respect the instructions from government officials.
