Norway pledges support to vulnerable people in South Sudan
The Norwegian government has pledged humanitarian assistance to South Sudan in order to protect vulnerable communities across the country.
This came after the Norwegian Minister of International Development, Annabel Tinderiem, and the Norwegian Ambassador to South Sudan, held a meeting with the First Vice President, Dr Riek Machar Teny, yesterday.
She hailed the agreement signed on Sunday on the unification of command, where she stressed that the Norwegian government would support the implementation of the Revitalised Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS).
“Minister Annabel said Norway commends the agreement reached by peace parties over the weekend to break the deadlock on security arrangements,” the statement from the office of the First Vice President read.
“She pledged her country’s readiness to continue supporting South Sudan in the implementation of the agreement and in providing humanitarian assistance to the vulnerable populations.”
She urged the parties to the agreement to expedite the entire process of the implementation of the Revitalised Peace Agreement.
On Tuesday, Annabel led a delegation to meet President Salva Kiir Mayardit, where she promised support for the Revitalised Peace agreement by the government of Norway.
A day before her meeting with the President, she held discussions with the Governor of Jongei State, Denay Jock Chagor, in Bor, to understand areas where the state government would seek the support of the Norwegian government.
Chagor presented to her the state government’s priorities, which included the distribution of seeds and tools to local communities, the construction of a dyke, and a drainage system.
“Governor Chagor briefed the delegates on the progress of the revitalised peace agreement and the security situation in Jonglei,” the statement from the office of the governor read.
“He added that some of the government’s priorities include provisions of seeds and tools to local communities, the construction of a dyke, the drainage system in Bor town and many more.”
