President Salva Kiir on Friday met with Hon. Paul Lugale Jumi, the Secretary-General of the ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), and directed him to implement the party’s goals, vision, and mission.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Lugale revealed that the President gave him the green light to prepare for the upcoming elections scheduled for December 2026.
He explained that the Secretariat is preparing to begin the process of mobilizing resources and registering party members from the grassroots to the national level.
During his appointment in June, President Kiir, who also chairs the SPLM party, tasked the newly appointed secretary-general with revitalizing the party and aligning its programs with the country’s political realities.
“As secretary-general, your primary duty is to revitalize the party, strengthen our structures, and align our programs with today’s political realities,” Kiir said. “The future of the SPLM rests on engaging and empowering South Sudan’s youth and women. They must not be left on the sidelines.”
Jumi, who now serves as the party’s sixth secretary-general, was tasked to strengthen the party’s structures.
“As secretary-general, your primary duty is to revitalize the party, strengthen our structures, and align our programs with today’s political realities,” Kiir said. “The future of the SPLM rests on engaging and empowering South Sudan’s youth and women. They must not be left on the sidelines.”
Meanwhile, the party’s Deputy Chairman, Dr. Benjamin Bol Mel, called for grassroots mobilization ahead of elections scheduled for December 2024, saying the party must win, not for power but for the people.
“Our president is a man of peace, carrying the hopes of millions of South Sudanese,” Dr. Bol Mel said. “We must be exemplary. Peace is not just a goal—it is the driver of development and national progress.”
“We are at a critical juncture in our nation’s history,” he said. “Together, we will steer South Sudan toward peace, stability, and prosperity.”
In a tone marked by reflection and resolve, President Kiir emphasized the need for integrity, transparency, and inclusive consultation as guiding principles for party leadership.
He noted that unity must become more than a political slogan; it must be a lived reality. Reconciliation, he said, will be central to the SPLM’s upcoming national agenda.
President Kiir reminded the party and the nation that the true strength of SPLM lies not merely in its legacy, but in its ability to adapt, include, and inspire.
“The future of SPLM—and indeed the future of South Sudan—rests on our ability to engage and empower our youth and women,” he said. “They must not be treated as spectators. They must be at the very heart of our leadership, our policies, and our vision.”
