South Sudan, Eritrea to strengthen bilateral relations

A delegation from the government of Eritrea met with President Salva Kiir Mayardit yesterday and pledged bilateral relations with Juba to pursue economic success in the horn of Africa. 

The Eritrean government’s delegation was led by the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Eritrea, Osman Saleh Mohammed. The other was the advisor to the Eritrean President, Yemane Ghebreab Woldeyohannes.

“The delegation delivered a message to President Salva Kiir Mayardit from President Isaias Afwerki, on fostering the existing bilateral relations between South Sudan and Eritrea, as well as issues pertaining to peace and security in the Horn of Africa region, “read the statement.

“South Sudan recognises the significance of Eritrea and what it represents in Africa. Eritrea has always centered its domestic and foreign policy on African interests irrespective of international pressures, including consistently supporting South Sudan.”

The South Sudan’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mayiik Ayii Deng, stressed the importance of cooperation in Africa to boost economy.

“He further explained that South Sudan can learn from Eritrea’s African-centred mindset, starting by pursuing closer cooperation with Countries across the Horn,” Ayii stated.

“Therefore, the Government of the Republic of South Sudan has taken this auspicious occasion of the delegation’s visit to deepen the country’s dialogue about regional stability and economic integration, knowing that these will speed our ascent as part and parcel of an African economic and political bloc.”

Ambassadors deployed

In March, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation disclosed that President Salva Kiir Mayardit had approved the deployment of 13 ambassadors to foreign missions in Germany, Italy, France, Belgium, Switzerland, Norway, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, India, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Eritrea and Nigeria.

 “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation joins President Salva Kiir in thanking the outgoing ambassadors for their dedicated service to their country for the last four to five years despite many challenges they faced while advancing our country’s interest abroad.”

The statement noted that the new ambassadors were tasked to bolster bilateral and multilateral relations in the aforesaid embassies.

“They represent a new chapter in South Sudanese diplomacy, and will further invigorate and strengthen our engagements in both bilateral and multilateral relations with our allies and friends,” added the statement.
