Kenya, with its cities swelling at the fastest rate on Earth, Africa is turning its focus to the mounting housing crisis.
The continent’s leaders, development partners, and private sector innovators will convene in Nairobi from April 8-10, 2026, for the Second Africa Urban Forum (AUF2) to tackle the challenge head-on.
Hosted by Kenya and the African Union Commission, the forum is themed “Adequate Housing for All.” It comes as projections show that by 2050, nearly two-thirds of Africans will live in urban areas, placing immense pressure on existing infrastructure and housing stocks.
“Kenya is ready to welcome the continent to this critical dialogue,” said Alice Wahome, the nation’s Cabinet Secretary for Housing and Urban Development. “We must reimagine housing not just as shelter, but as a catalyst for economic opportunity and environmental sustainability.”
The forum will move beyond policy to showcase practical, African-led solutions in affordable housing, climate-resilient infrastructure, and smart city financing. A major goal is the creation of the “Nairobi Declaration,” a continental roadmap aimed at guiding sustainable urban investment and planning.
Dr. Mary Mbole-Kariuki of the African Union stressed the need for cities that can “withstand climate shocks while unlocking economic opportunities,” noting the forum is vital for aligning national priorities with the AU’s Agenda 2063.
With preparations complete, Kenya is positioning Nairobi as the convening capital for Africa’s urban future.
