Lt Gen Atem Biar was on Monday sworn into office as the new Director General of the Directorate of Nationality, Passports and Immigration.
President Salva Kiir presided over the event. The oath was administered by the Chief Justice Chan Madut.
Biar was appointed in a Republican Decree on May 19, 2021, to replace Lt Gen John Maluth.
Gen. Maluth— who has served in the directorate for three years since 2018—was sacked in a Presidential Decree read out on the government-owned broadcaster – SSBC on Wednesday evening.
Although no reason was attached to his dismissal, Maluth was immediately replaced by Gen. Lt. Gen Atem Marol Biar- the former Assistant of Police Inspector General for Training and Human Resource Development.
His administration has been experiencing challenges including delay in processing nationality and passport documents to citizens.
The Police department of Immigration, Nationality, Passport and Civil Registry was amongst the government’s institutions listed in a report on economic fraud by a task force commissioned by President Kiir in 2020.
His sacking is the latest in series of Kiir’s crackdown on senior security and government officials in 2021.
In April this year, President Kiir removed his army chief, Johnson Juma Okot after serving for less than a year and replaced him with Gen. Santino Deng Wol.
