BREAKING: Kiir appoints Machar’s loyalist Presidential Advisor for Peace

President Salva Kiir has appointed SPLM-IO General Chief of Staff 1st. Lt. Simon Gatwech Dual Presidential Advisor for Peace by President Salva Kiir Mayardit in a development that astonished many.
Gen. Gatwech is a staunch loyalist of Dr. Riek Machar, the country’s First Vice President and Chairperson of the SPLM-IO.
Last month, Gatwech breached protocol after firing the SPLM-IO director for intelligence service without the knowledge of Machar in what reflected a rift between the two at the time.
Kiir issued a Presidential decree read on the state-owned television South Sudan Broadcasting Cooperation Monday evening appointing Gatwech as his advisor for peace.
While the move has been welcome by many, some say the move is a political tactic to weaken the SPLM-IO.
