The 550 members of the revitalised national legislative assembly will take an oath office on July 9, 2021, the day when South Sudan will also be commemorating 10 years of independence.

The press secretary in the office of the president Ateny Wek Ateny was on Wednesday quoted by Eye Radio revealing that preparation for the oath-taking ceremony was on advanced stage.

“There is a committee that is working to ensure complete formation of the parliament at the state level. I think it will be completed within this few days and the committee may set July 9th as the day for swearing-in,” he said.

The legislators will be sworn-in alongside the members of council of states.

President Salva Kiir nominated the lawmakers in a Republic Decree that was read on state-run TV station SSBC on May 11, 2021.

The appointees were drawn from the leading SPLM party, the SPLM-IO, the South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA), the Other Opposition Parties (OPP), and the former detainees (FDs).
