Members of Parliament allied to the Vice Deputy President Taban Deng Gai have now called on the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) to suspend the formation of the transitional government until their grievances are heard.
The group, comprising legislators and former cabinet ministers, have called on the regional body to stop the on-going state appointments till their calls of inclusion are considered.
‘‘We request IGAD to call for urgent submission of the parties that comprised the ITGoNU to facilitate the implementation of Article 1.3.1, R-ARCISS, 2018…and to put on hold the formation of RTGoNU until our concern is addressed,’’ reads partially the lawmakers’ letter to IGAD dated March 2, 2021.
The lawmakers launched a complaint that despite writing to President Salva Kiir on February 23 about their allegations on inclusion in state appointments; their pleas had gone unheeded.
In their letter, they protested the appointments in six states—Central Equatoria State, Unity State, Northern Baher El Ghazal State, Warrap State, Jonglei State and Western Baher El Ghazal State— saying the SPLM/A-IO held a stake in the government by being part of the Interim Transitional Government of National Unity.
To this date, the lawmakers said they had only received rebuttals from the Minister of Information Michael Makuei Lueth and the SPLM National Secretariat.
Mr Lueth argued the agreement changed course from ARCSS to R-ARCSS when the First Deputy President Dr Riek Machar came into the picture during the revitalised peace talk.
Led by their Chief Whip Gatwech Kuany, the group argues that in the ARCSS 2015 the SPLM/A-IO had 33 per cent in ministerial positions after GRSS’s 53 per cent. And that this percentage does not change in any way when moving to the revitalised agreement.
They want IGAD Chairman and Prime Minister of Sudan Abdallah Hamdok, Executive Sectrary Workneh Gebeyahu and IGAD’s Special Envoy in the country Ismail Wais to intervene.
President Kiir has so far announced state officers in 10 states pending oath-taking in most states. Already, governs of Central Equatoria State and Warrap State have sworn in the newly appointed leaders pending other states.
