JUBA – The newly-promoted English Premier League side Brentford opened their top-flight league campaign after decades of relegation with a 2-0 victory against Arsenal on Friday night.
Having clinched a promotion to the premier league last season, since their relegation 1947, Brentford played one of the most important games in the club’s history as they enjoyed the backing of the fans.
The Bees looked stingy from the first whistle and threatened the Gunners on the breaks. Arsenal—which resigned established players such as Bukayo Saka, Granit Xhaka, and even Alexandre Lacazette— struggled to break the hosts’ backline.
Before the end of the first half, the Bees broke the deadlock, making their intention clear. Brentford hit on the counter and new Gunners’ acquisition Ben White cleared the ball off the line only for Sergi Canos to pounce on the loose ball 15 yards out. Canos fired a shot from the edge of the box to hand his side the lead in the 22nd minute prompting Arsenal to start chasing the game.
The Bees would then hold a firm grip on the lead for the entirety of the first half as they headed straight to the tunnel having boosted their confidence.
In the second half, a long throw ball into the Gunners’ box bounced off allowing Christian Norgaard to head in a second after Ben White failed to clear his line. The hosts were 2-0 up and Arsenal had a game to chase.
Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher could be heard commenting that Arsenal ‘had begun a new season with the same old story. The Gunners are playing Chelsea and Manchester City in their next fixtures and Mikel Arteta has a problem to fix before that time comes.
Rumored transfers
The Gunners are struggling up top and have been linked to the signature of Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham and Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez. However, after Chelsea’s move for Romelu Lukaku became successful, Italian media report that the Nerazzurri could be reluctant to sell the Argentine especially knowing that a replacement would not come cheap in the market.
