South Sudan’s Cobra Sports basketball club earned their first win of the Africa Basketball League (BAL) Top 16 campaign in South Africa after a 77-67 win over Kenyan Champions Ulinzi Warriors.

The South Sudan boys bounced back after losing to Mozambican side Ferroviaro de Beira by 76-46 in the opening game last week.

According to the information posted on the club’s Facebook page, Bush Wamukota led them to their first win following their defeat in the opening game.

“We (Cobra Sport) are pleased with Wamukota’s two three-pointers, which brought the score to 50-32.”

Dut Abraham, the Cobras’ head of delegation, said the team had gained a much greater psychological boost and was hoping for a win in the last game to book their place in the 2023 African League.

“We have hope and we believe that we can make it after today’s win. Our players are good, so yes we can, ” he said.

He said the players did something big by putting in an impressive performance against Kenyan giants, Worries, adding that it was something the group felt happy about.

“Especially in the last quarter, they got off to a 61-56 cushion on a dip by Wamukota and then heaped another three for a 66-55 margin with 5:38 played,’’ he said.

He said the team’s new signing, Nzie, gathered a league-high of 32 points for their side, which lost to Ulinzi in the qualifiers in Tanzania last month.

The top six teams from the South African Championship will qualify for the finals.

Previously, clubs from Egypt, Tunisia, Angola, Nigeria, Senegal, and Rwanda were in the finals. The other clubs playing in Group H1 are Cape Town Tigers (South Africa), New Star (Burundi), and Matero Magic (Zambia).
