JUBA – South Sudan will join Uganda and Tanzania—as part of the teams drawn from the Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA)—to battle for the 2021 COSAFA Women’s Championship.

The tournament which attracts 12 teams from East and Southern Africa will begin on Thursday, August 19, and will run all the way to August 26 at the Nelson Mandela Bay in South Africa.

“We are delighted to have three guest teams from the CECAFA region and we are looking forward to a very good Championship,” said COSAFA General Secretary Sue Destombes, as he welcomed the three guest teams to the tournament.

COSAFA said that the tournament would be played under strict observation of the COVID-19 protocol.

It is the first time South Sudan is participating in the regional tournament after its establishment five years ago. The South Sudanese have been drawn against fellow East Africans Tanzania, Zimbabwe, and Botswana in Group B. Tanzania, which made its inaugural appearance in the tournament last year, beat Zimbabwe 1-0 before losing to Botswana in the opening stages of the tournament.

In Group A, defending champions South Africa will square it with Malawi, Angola, and Mozambique, while in Group C; neighbors Uganda will be up in arms against Eswatini, Namibia, and Zambia.
