The Union of Journalists of South Sudan (UJOSS), supported by Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA), held its second Breakfast Meeting in Juba on June 2, bringing together media practitioners, public communicators, policymakers, and technology experts to explore how artificial intelligence is transforming newsrooms and public institutions.

Held under the theme “How AI is Reshaping Newsrooms and Public Institutions, and What Can Be Done to Respond Effectively to These Changes”, the discussion focused on both the opportunities and risks presented by rapid technological advancement.

Participants noted that AI tools are already changing how news is gathered, produced, verified, and distributed, while also improving data analysis and public engagement in government institutions. However, they warned of serious challenges including the spread of misinformation, algorithmic bias, potential job losses, and ethical dilemmas facing both journalists and public officials.

Speakers emphasized that adoption of new technologies must be guided by strong ethical standards, capacity-building programmes, and clear institutional policies to ensure AI serves the public good without compromising accuracy, fairness, or press freedom.

The forum concluded with key recommendations. These include, strengthening digital literacy across sectors, investing in local innovation, and fostering closer collaboration between media houses, government bodies, and tech partners.

Attendees agreed that regulation and training are essential to ensure AI enhances transparency, accountability, and quality of service in South Sudan.
